Ingredients Needed

Salt– Use coarseKosher salt, not table salt. It is great for seasonings as it brings out and enhances the overall flavor. When you make your own spice rubs you can control the level of every spice and herb in it!

Black pepper– This helps to add a little bit of “bite” to your seasoning. For more of a subtle flavor, you could use ground white pepper instead.

Garlic– Use granulated garlic or dehydrated garlic instead of garlic powder but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Smoked paprika– I like thesmoky flavor that this provides rather than the sweetflavor of regular paprika. However, you could use either.

Onion– I like to use granulated or minceddriedonion (dehydrated onion) for the texture but if you only have onion powder feel free to use that.

Ground coriander– This is used as a boost to the flavor but feel free to leave it out if you don’t like this one.

Crushed red pepper flakes– I like a bit of heat to my spice blends, so feel free to cut back the amount if you’d like your steak seasoning to be more mild. You can also omit it all together.

Ground mustard– This adds a bit of tang and acidity to your seasoning.

Parsley flakes– Be sure to use dried parsley flakes, as fresh will not be shelf stable and will cause your steak seasoning to clump together.

Preferably overnight, but up to at least an hour will work if the seasoning contains salt. If it doesn’t contain salt, you can season it immediately before cooking.

  • If you want the mix a little finer, toss it in a spice grinder for a quick pulse or two.
  • Remember that all ground and dried spices start to lose their potency at about 6 months after opening the jar, so make sure you date the bottles when you open them.
  • If they are older, you might need to use a tad more than called for. Simply smell them and taste test a small amount if you have any concerns.
