"There’s no trend like aTikTok trend, and the latest one to make the rounds has Gen Zers personalising luxury fashion in a way previously unseen. Enter the era of Gen Z remixing and restyling luxury bags. With celebrities such asDua Lipa, Lily Allen, and Yunjin fromKpop groupLe Serafim putting their spin ondopamine dressingby adding stickers, charms, jewellery and keychains to their handbags, it was only a matter of time before the internet caught on to this latest trend takeover."For my latest SCREENSHOT Media column, I explore the bag personalisation craze that has Gen Z in a chokehold, the anti-quiet luxury pushback against a fashion sea of bland and beige, the DIY mindset that is shifting luxury fashion gears, and how in the current fashion landscape, accessoriesneedaccessories. Trends don't appear out of nowhere; they can generally be traced back to a pivotal moment in time. Whether it's the debut of a newbie designer's runway collection, the start of a political sh*tstorm, a tongue-wagging pop culture event or a viral social media moment, there's no trend smoke without fire.If you had the foresight to predict a global pandemic, climate change, and the political instability and outrage wreaking havoc worldwide, you might have seen the rise of the alt girl aesthetic coming. With a new wave of creators, pop culture icons, and subculture movements giving this aesthetic the attention it deserves, baddies are putting their stamp on fashion’s finest countercultural trend.Alt fashion is in its baddie era. #writer #editor #substack #newsletter #fashion #fashionindustry #fashiontrends #trends #subculture #aesthetic #counterculture #creators #popculture #socialmedia #altgirl https://lnkd.in/ewQUBSPu

Trends come, trends go… so what’s the appeal?Trying to keep up with the emotional and financial toll of relentless trend cycles is exhausting - but there's more to the trend machine than meets the eye.“I think that in this day and age, people gravitate toward hyper-specific fashion trends because it satisfies a fundamental human need and basic desire for belonging and self-expression. In a digital landscape teeming with infinite possibilities, such aesthetics, however niche or mainstream, transcend geographical boundaries and allow people to find validation among like-minded peers who share their passions.”I spoke to Josh Greenblatt about the ghost of fashion trends for The Globe and Mail, and their deeper underlying significance.https://lnkd.in/dEip_-jZ

I've done the typical fashion girlie corporate climb, from fashion cupboard intern to editorial shoot assistant to stylist, e-commerce editor and now fashion writer and columnist, and it's been a lot. This isn't to say I haven't enjoyed my time working in fashion because there have been some really rewarding moments. But I've been thinking a lot recently about the nature of working in fashion... Who is this industry built for? Who can afford to participate in a literal and metaphorical sense? Who has to let their fashion career dreams go? And why are some of the most brilliant creatives leaving?None of these questions come with a quick answer or an easy fix, but red flags have been raised and it's time to take a hard look at the industry from the inside out.#writer #editor #journo #article #fashion #fashionindustry #fashiontrends #substack #newsletter #career #fashiontingz #stylist #intern #corporatehttps://lnkd.in/eqeQGFZs

"At a time whenwomen’s rightsare being rolled back across the entire globe, Gen Z women are embracing anti-male gaze outfits that represent a fusion of self-expression and social defiance. Of course, there’s more to this fashion vibe shift than meets the eye. FYPs everywhere are seeing a surge in anti-male gaze outfits, sparking essential conversations on apps like TikTok and Instagram. This anti-fashion movement suggests that Gen Zers are ushering in a new style era, one that lets them dress in a way that feels true to them, without limit or discomfort."For my latest SCREENSHOT Media column, I explore the rise of anti-male gaze outfits as a way to shift fashion power dynamics, style icons and creators who are embracing this movement, the importance of fashion autonomy and the Gen Z spin on Millennial man-repeller dressing.Big thanks to Gabriela Serpa Royo and Riani Kenyon for speaking to me for this piece, and to Alma Fabiani and the SCREENSHOT team for their work on this!#writer #editor #columnist #journo #fashion #fashionindustry #fashiontrends #trends #malegaze #manrepeller #antimalegaze #outfits #genz #tiktok #socialmediahttps://lnkd.in/dgcX857G

Fashion is in a messed up state of affairs.Pensioner age designers are getting prison time for smuggling crocodile handbags into the US in a multiyear conspiracy.New York’s high-flyers are rummaging the discount shelves at high street retail chains. And indpendent brands shutter while luxury sales decline elsewhere as the economic outlook remains bleak. In this sociocultural and economic climate, its a dog eat dog world. But whatever way you look at it, the mess and stress is set to stick around as the industry is forced to reinvent.#fashion #fashionindustry #fashiontrends #writer #editor #journo #newsletter #substack #trends #designers #brands #luxury #social #cultural #insights https://lnkd.in/efWBzDz9

I'm a big tea drinker. Matcha, green tea, oolong, hōjicha, black honey tea... you name a tea, and I'll be guaranteed to try it.And after spending two weeks in Japan, going to both traditional and modern tea ceremonies, and stuffing as much tea into my suitcase as possible, I've come away with a newfound appreciation of tea and the culture, craft and community it represents. That's why for my latest Canvas8 report I explore how an East meets West vibe shift has taken over the tea scene in America, looking at how the cultural perception of tea is being reshaped, the influencers who are shaking things up and the next-gen community that comes with this.Big thanks to Kristin McCoy-Ward, tea expert and consultant, for speaking to me for this piece!#writer #editor #journo #insights #behaviouralinsights #culturalintelligence #subculture #tea #community #craft #teaceremony #matcha #greenteahttps://lnkd.in/eraVbRKX
