For the next few months the whale population along the upper and lower California coast is going to have its numbers considerably decimated. According to word from the south the killer fleet is converging from the upper nia coast to California to meet the big factory ship Esperanza off Cape San Lucas. The factory ship is en route from Norway, and will arrive off the Cape early next month.

1 During the last month the killer boats Port Saunders and Hawk of the California Whaling Company fleet and formerly working out of Oakland, captured 24 California gray whales which were delivered to the mother ship California off Southern The local fleet is at present based off Point Dume, and according to Captain F. K. Dedrick, head of the company, has had its best season in many years. The killer fleet is now preparing to go after the finback and the blue whales, the season for which is just. commencing.

the meantime the killer. boats Barbara and Clemente are being prepared for the coming season and will join the Esperanza off Cape San Lucas. AIR CONDITIONS TRAIN. James B. Duffy, Assistant Passenger Traffic Manager, Athison, Topeka Santa Fe, Railway, announced today that all chair cars on Fe trains Nos.

23 and 24, Grand Canyon Limited, 9 and 2, The Navajo, and 22, The Missionary, are now air conditioned and in service. This part of the Santa Fe's $2,000,000 air-conditioning program for 1935 has been finished ahead of schedule. It is now expected that the air-conditioning of all standard and tourist sleepers on The Chief and the California Limited, will be completed by May 15th. Principal Santa Fe transcontinental trains, serving every class of travel, will be entirely air -conditioned this summer. In 1934 the Santa Fe air-conditioned 89 dining, observation, lounge and club cars, and compartment and drawing room sleepers; and when present program is completed, the road will have in service nearly 370 air passenger cars of all types.

Passenger revenues are showing an encouraging trend, according to Duffy. The increase of about 4.5 per cent in November jumped to 18 per cent in December, while in January the road's transcontinental trains, carried more passengers than in any other month in three years. Winter travel to California is holding this high level. COLUMBIA TO CRUISE. 16th- The DOG WATCH By FRANK From St. Petersburg, Florida, comes one of the most dramatic tales of the sea to be recorded by Father Neptune in a long time. A missing sponge fishermen's boat has been discovered anchored over. one of the sponge beds at a little frequented spot in the Florida Keys. The craft been by fire and three "Badly burned' skeletins were found in the ruins.

Down below were discovered the skeletons of two more men, still in their diving suits, just as they had died when their air supply had been cut off by the fire above them. From the evidence presented a sudden burst of flames must have swept the boat' from the engine room while the three air tenders were handling the air pumps for the two sponge fishermen at work below the surface. They had no chance to warn their companions in the depths before death struck them down. The men below, with their air supply suddenly stopped, and with no answer to their frantic signals, perished miserably by suffocation. The boat had been missing since November of 1933.

This tale brings to mind the tragedy of the big British sailing ship Marlborough, which sailed from Sydney, for England, by way of the lower tip of South America 40 years ago, Years went by and the ship failed to arrive. It was concluded that the craft had fallen victim to one of the terrific South Pacitic storms and had gone to the bottom with all hands or else had struck an iceberg in the Antarctic as it sought to negotiate the turn past Cape Horn and had foundered. In 1914 the crew of Chilean steamer exploring along the rugged shores of one of the islands near the entrance to the Straits of Magellan was surprised to see projecting from a rocky gut the tall sticks of what appeared to be a sailing ship. A boats' crew was sent into the narrow passage and it was seen that the sticks came from the deck of a full rigged sailing ship. Dimly made out on the weather beaten stern was the half obliterated word "Marlborough." boat's crew clambered aboard to find the decks rotting beneath their feet.

Near what was left of the wheel were seen the bleaching skeletons. of five men. That they had come to violent ends was shown by the fact that the skulls of two of them had been split by KESTER a hand ax. Down in the cabin were the skeletons of more of the crew. What had happened? The mystery will probably never be cleared up.

Was it mutiny in which all hands perished, or was the crew assaulted by the native Indians and answeracerne a loss man? of the There is no ough is one of the unsolved mysteries of the Seven Seas. TRAFFIC MEN TO GOLF The annual golf tournament of the Oakland Traffic Club will take place in Sequoyah Country Club on April 16. The first foursome of the local divot diggers will tee off at 12:30 in the afternoon.

The winners will meet the winners of the Traffic Association to play for a permanent cup if present plans are carried out. WHAT IS COTTON? The following is F. supplied by W. Gleason, editor of "Traffic Tidings," the bulletin of the Oakland Traffic Club: "Cotton is the overcoat of a seed that is planted and grown in the Southern states to keep the producer broke and the buyer crazy. The fiber varies in color and weight, and the man who.

can guess the nearest the length of the fiber is called a cotton man by the public, a fool by the farmer, a poor business man by his creditors. The price is fixed in New York, goes up when you have sold and down when you have bought. A man working for a group of mills was sent to New York to watch the cotton market, and after a few days' deliberation wired his firms to this effect: 'Some think it will go up, some think it will go down. I do, too. Whatever you do will be wrong.

Act at Cotton is planted in the Spring, mortgaged in the Summer, and left in the field in Winter. There are other definiItions but none better than this."
